Natasha Turner, N.D. is a Toronto-based naturopathic doctor. She is the founder of the Clear Medicine wellness boutique and author of the bestselling book The Hormone Diet. Each week in her column for That's Fit.ca, Dr. Turner advises readers on how to remedy common health issues as well as improve their overall health.
Last week's column on 8 Hormonal Imbalances That Stop You From Losing Weight received a lot of feedback so I've decided to follow it up over the coming weeks with discussions on the cause and natural treatment options for each of the eight conditions. This week's topic: Estrogen Dominance.Estrogen balance is essential for achieving and maintaining fat loss. In men and premenopausal women, too much estrogen, a condition called estrogen dominance causes toxic fat gain, water retention, bloating and a host of other health and wellness issues. While premenopausal women with too much estrogen tend to have the pear-shape body type with more weight at the hips, both men and menopausal women with this excess exhibit an apple shape with more fat accumulation in the abdominal area. Researchers have now identified excess estrogen to be just as great a risk factor for obesity – in both sexes – as poor eating habits and lack of exercise.
Estrogen dominance can also be an issue for men, as testosterone and progesterone naturally decline with age or stress, and estrogen conversely rises. This hormonal shift impacts not only the physique but also prostate health. Statistics show that shockingly high numbers of men who live to the age of 65 and older will develop prostate cancer, likely due to estrogen exposure.
Causes of Estrogen Dominance after the jump
There are only two ways to accumulate excess estrogen in the body: we either produce too much of it on our own or acquire it from our environment or diet. Unfortunately, accumulating estrogen is not hard. We are constantly exposed to estrogen-like compounds in foods that contain toxic pesticides, herbicides and growth hormones. Many of these toxins are known to cause weight gain, which serves to fuel the production of more estrogen from our own fat cells. More weight gain then leads to insulin resistance which, you guessed it, increases the risk of estrogen dominance.
Pharmaceutical hormones such as those used in hormone-replacement therapy (HRT) or the birth control pill also increase estrogen, whether we take them actively or absorb them when they make their way into our drinking water. We are living in a virtual sea of harmful estrogens, and researchers are only beginning to identify the extent of this exposure on health in humans and even other species.
What Does Estrogen Dominance Look Like?
If you are a premenopausal woman with estrogen dominance, you likely have PMS, too much body fat around the hips and difficulty losing weight. Perhaps you have a history of gallstones, varicose veins, uterine fibroids, cervical dysplasia, endometriosis or ovarian cysts. For all you men out there, low libido, poor motivation, depression, loss of muscle mass and increased belly fat are big red flags. You may even notice breast development. These symptoms are very similar to those that result from low testosterone, since estrogen dominance is most often accompanied with suboptimal testosterone.
In both sexes, estrogen dominance is thought to be responsible for many types of cancers. This particular hormone imbalance is currently estimated to be one of the leading causes of breast, uterine and prostate cancer.
Use these foods or specific habits to decrease harmful estrogen:
- Maintain healthy liver function and regular bowel movements to encourage the elimination of estrogen. I have formulated Clear Detox – Hormonal Health and Clear Detox Digestive Health to specifically support this process. For better estrogen balance in both men and women, simply take one pack of the hormonal health in the morning and one in the evening. Each bottle lasts one month and these products can be taken for four months or more.
- Consume weak phytoestrogenic foods such as pomegranate, flaxseeds, pears, apples, berries, organic non-GMO fermented soy, wheat germ, oats and barley.
- Eat yogurt and high-fibre foods to aid the breakdown and elimination of estrogen.
- Choose organic dairy and meat products to reduce your exposure to hormone additives.
- Add plenty of detoxifying foods to your diet, including broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, beets, carrots, apples, ginger, onions and celery.
- Avoid alcohol, it spurs the production of harmful estrogen. If you do consume alcohol, always take a 1 mg folic acid and a B complex to reduce its negative effects on your hormonal health.
- Avoid exposure to xenoestrogens from plastics, cosmetics and the birth control pill.
- Avoid unfermented soy products like tofu and soy milk.
- Infrared sauna treatments are an excellent way to rid your body of estrogen.
- Exercise!

This is nothing but an advertisement for her product. Shame on AOL for pitching this as an information piece. Snake oil by any other name is still ...

Too much estrogen prevents you from losing weight, plus
it could give you a stroke after many years of taking it.

I was reading this ad here due to the fact I am 28 years old, I had a fibroid removed in 2006 off my uterus, and I stil have not had a menstrual cycle. I have gained alot of weight over the past few years, and it's not that I eat fast food .We have healthy meals everyday.I also have irritablility, mood swings like crazy and I am really getting concerned my estrogen levels are off. I am not sure what is going on like I said I am only 28 could my levels be off at a young age and could it be due to the fact I am not having menstrual cycle? If someone could give me some answers it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, Ladies! I am 54 years young.
I found this article on Estrogen Dominance thoroughly accurate, informative and refreshing. I have recently been diagnosed with estrogen dominance and had no idea all the things it could cause, most of which I am currently experiencing in one form or another. I had an exporatory D&C after a Pelvic Ultrasound showed an abnormal thickening of my Uterine Lining and 2 small, benign Fibroids. I had no symptoms except those indicating Estrogen Dominance which can lead to Uterine Dysplasia which may or may not lead to Cancer. Due to this procedure, for about a month afterward my Estrogen levels lowered and my Progesterone seemed to rally resulting in complete relief from the systemic Arthritis I had acquired, my fatigue, etc. and even my painfully Sore Feet recovered to the point that I haven't even been using my Foot Orthotics! I even sleep better. My Fibromyalgia (inflammation, muscles, and general pain level) was way better and I lost weight and started to get back a little sex drive! It was like reversing the clock backwards by at least 5 years!! Wow, was I happy. Unfortunately, once my body started cycling again (even though I am fully Menopausal my body continues to have a mild hormonal cycle, I find, which is natural) I can feel my Estrogen levels building up again and my lower back is sore, I am again constipate and putting on weight which I had lost over that month, etc. so I am thrilled you wrote this article - believe me, you have helped more people than you realize and now I am a BIG fan of this website, " ThatsFit.ca " . I say with great earnest, Kudos to you, you should put your name in bigger letters on the Front Page of this Website because I cannot remember the Naturopathic Doctor's Name, which to me is important, but I have the Website address and I'll look it up - VERY GOOD WORK, GIRL !!! & Thanks a Million!
Ciaou for Now.

PS. I got a whole lot of info off the book, "Cancer Schmancer" by Fran Drescher, of "The Nanny" TV show Fame. She had Uterine Cancer caused in part by Estrogen Excess (Estrogen Dominance).
But I'm not out to promote anyone, I just live in the city of Saskatoon in the Province of Saskatchewan, CANADA
PSS. May Jehovah the God of Moses and his Son, Christ Jesus continue to bless you in all ways and continue to keep you and yours, always safe. The incoming Kingdom Government of Jesus Christ will soon erase all tears, sickness and pain - and there will be Survivors to welcome back the Resurrected ones! Rev. Ch. 7- all.

PSSS. ADDENDUM: I attribute the Excess Estrogen to a composite of issues, such as my Caretaker's excessive use of Pesticide [ie. Chemical Xeno-estrogens = Cancer causing estrogen mimickers] in my building and on the grounds & grass, the Automobile Exhaust in the air [Xenoestrogens] because I live right on a very busy street and the traffic is constant and also for years I have wantonly and undescriminately taken a variety of Estrogenic Herbs and Spices [Phytoestrogens = Natural Plant Estrogens, which may or may not be good for you because they are estrogens nonetheless] which have obviously taken their toll as I used myself as a Guinea Pig for years - bad idea! (There are always valid and profuse reasons for leaving some of those 'old fashioned' Herbs in the past ie. there's a reason they were left in the past - they cause problems, only we forgot and now a new generation is experimenting with them again, to our ultimate detriment! Thank you for opening my eyes to the cause and offering some fresh solutions - Yay!
My doctor is going to try some progesterone supplementation but again, only very short term and micro-low use of artificial hormones is recommended, if at all. I find Yams (sweet potatoes) and Carrots to be quite Progesteronish? which should balance the Estrogen dominance a bit, also I find Beets strengthening but are not sure of their effect on my hormones. However, I have heard MANY bad things about artificial progesagens and progestagins and Provera - bad things. So I'm going to try a wee bit of "natural" progesterone, called bio-identical, Suzanne Sommers has a book out on it, at the same time, nothing is really bio-identical so try to use the least amount possible to get the result desired, if at all.

PSSSt: I heard Aspirin lowers Estrogen.
Prozac may also potentially lower Estrogen. My personal theory is that Prozac is made up of a Micro-Dose of: "Pro"gesterone (used for PMS caused by Excess Estrogen during the female cycle and also known as Post-Male Syndrome), "Z"anax (a tranquilizing anti-depressant), "A"spirin (a painkiller and anti-inflammatory) and "C"affeine (no introduction necessary). Hence, the name "PRO.Z.A.C.".
I hope this all has been of some help to you out there. Feel Free to Comment (Blog) or expand on the Topic ...
O, and for those who don't know, "lol" in texting means "laugh out loud" so the person is making a joke. (Who knew?)
