Exercise During Pregnancy: A Definite Yes!
If you're expecting, there's no need to give up your regular fitness routine, even when you're nearing the end of your pregnancy. According to recent studies from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, there is no difference between the weight and size of babies born to mothers who exercised in later stages of their pregnancy and those mothers who stayed sedentary. "Exercise poses no threat to the health of the foetus," the researchers said in the International Journal of Obesity, adding, "partaking in low-level physical activity has beneficial effects on materno-foetal health."
But don't go signing up for a triathlon in your third trimester -- there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to exercising while you're expecting. Most importantly, talk to your doctor first. And try to take it easy -- consider taking up a gentle exercise such as yoga or pilates.
And as for after the baby's born? Exercising while you're breastfeeding can help prevent bone loss.
