The Jane Fonda Workout
Print
Jane Fonda's Workout is thought to be the best-selling home video of all time.
Released in 1982, it stayed on the Billboard Top Ten Chart until 1985. Some say that Fonda's workout tapes had a hand in popularizing the VCR and there is no doubt she put aerobics on the map not to mention striped, belted leotards.
According to a unauthorized fan site (on which you can buy Jane Fonda workout tapes), while filming The Electric Horseman in Utah, Fonda was unable to find any exercise classes so she started teaching her own out of a local spa. They were so popular that upon returning to Los Angeles, she opened her own studio in Beverly Hills. Admission was $5.50 per class. The rest is history as Fonda went on to release 23 workout videos, five workout books and thirteen audio programs.
Fonda, who is now 71 and looks fantastic, would have been 45 in this video and her body is to be admired. The best scene is the over-dramatic, staged opening. The worst is the over-enthusiastic participant who woo-hoos throughout.
Ultimately, I wonder what the point of a belt on a leotard is, but am considering giving it a go tonight at the gym. With leg warmers, of course.
Have you ever tried Fonda's workout video? Do you remember your mother sweating to the tape in a leotard in your living room? Share your Fonda memories!

Woo-hoo! This is awesome. And brings back many memories of my mother's pastel-coloured aerobic outfits from the 1980s. She use to schlep me with her to her classes and I would watch her as she would not be doing anything that looked remotely like what the instructor was doing. Arms flailing about in high-cut-belted work-out gear with matching headband. I love the 80s! I'm going to go listen to some Hall & Oates now.
PS - let's not forget about Richard Simmons "Sweating to the Oldies"...
